Laboratory Manager

Dr. Christopher Dance manages both the research lab and the data mining group at the Xerox Research Centre Europe (XRCE) in Grenoble, France. He guides fundamental research enabling future service technologies that deliver value, intellectual property and scientific impact. The lab focuses on text and image categorization and tagging, knowledge extraction from text, semantic search, schema management, translation, prognostics, aesthetics, infrastructure management and ethnomethodology.

Previously Dance managed XRCE's visual content group which established the first practical methods for image categorization capable of automatically recognizing diverse generic visual categories (like books, radios, cars) in real world imaging conditions and proactive search in mobile imaging.

His prior research examined mixed-reality document interaction, reinforcement learning, a-stable distributions and computational geometry for 3D modelling.

Dance joined Xerox Research Centre Europe (XRCE) in 1997, after completing a B.A. in Theoretical Physics, a Ph.D. in Information Engineering and a Research Assistantship at Cambridge University, England.
